Amazon.com Basketball System Buying Guide With the high-quality construction of many portable basketball systems, turning your driveway into a basketball court can be as simple as hooking up your garden hose. But while a portable system may ultimately be your best choice, there are reasons you may want to consider an in-ground or wall-mount system before you decide.
In-Ground Systems In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground--either via a bolt mounting kit or directly into the ground--and are generally more rigid and take up less space than portables. In-ground systems often require that you hire a professional to complete the task, but when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take punishing dunks with ease.
Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, include removable post features that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and feature heavy-duty break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several types to choose from. Some feature a counter-balance spring that lets you perform easy, one-hand adjustments while others may feature a sturdy, pneumatic system.
Wall-Mount Systems Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a house, a tall retaining wall, or a garage. Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, since you won't take any space up with the base or pole. Not all systems include the necessary hardware, so make certain you add a mounting kit to your list.
Portable Systems Portable systems require minimal installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems generally feature a base that can be filled with sand or water to stabilize them and include wheels for portability. Although they are not as sturdy as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to set up and can often be folded for convenient storage.
Backboard Considerations Regardless of which system you choose, you'll want to brush up on Backboards 101. Most residential systems feature backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic gives the professional look and feel of glass, it is not as rigid as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are virtually vandal resistant, but don't offer the true rebounding action.
The regulation size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards provide more bank shot opportunities, they are generally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board.

"Worth the extra $" 2010-08-09 By bp Worth the money. It was a little hard putting the main pole together (need two strong adults), but other than that, assembly was not a problem. Playa well, no complaints so far. Customer Buzz
"The Beast is a "Beast"" 2010-07-23 By Antony Jordan This is by far one of the highest quality and stable basketball goals I have ever used in ground or portable. The amount of stability for this goal is very unusual for a portable - but once you see the components you will understand why. A double base system that fills up with water or sand giving over 500lbs of weight for stability. It also comes with a cork screw stake that you can attach to the base for added stablity. Two 5 inch steal poles and a real glass 60 inch back board really make for a quality playing experience. I thought moving this goal would be impossible but considering the size it is realitively easy - only difficulty I had was moving the goal off of the drive way. Using some plywood I was able to reduce the distance from move drive way to the street making the transision much smoother. My kids and I have a great time practicing and play with this goal. Many of the neighborhood kids also enjoy playing as well. It is not the easiest thing to put together but with the help of another adult it would greatly reduce the time to assemble it - I gets pretty heavy. Unfortunately for me it was a man job. There are a couple of things to look out for during the assembly. 1. Joining the poles together First you have to join the two main support poles together. The directions tell you to slide them together but you quickly find that this is impossible without some innovation. First get some WD-40 and sparay the parts that will "slide" together. Secondly push the poles together as far as you can before you stand them up. Lean the poles against a tree or the side of your house - place a wood block on top of the pole and use the back end of an ax or a sledge hammer to properly "slide" the poles together. 2. The screw jack assembly (lowers and lifts the height of the goal) There is a hole at the top of the screw jack and the screw jack sleeve. Make sure that these holes are lined up during the attachment to the backboard support. The first time I assembled the this part the screw jack was not lined with the screw jack sleeve and I attached only the screw jack sleeve - so the goal did not have the ability to go up and down. Make sure the holes are lined up and put the support screw through both and there will be no problems. 3. Rim attachment (foam pad) By this time I was getting tired and just missed this. Before you attach the rim to the back board make sure that the foam pad is between the rim and the backboard. The instructions tell you peel of the backing and adhere it to the backboard - the one I had did not have any adhesive so I put some wood glue to keep it in place long enough to attach the rim. (You don't want to attach the rim more than once - the top screws are not the easiest things to tighten. 4. The directions say you have the choice between using a wrenches or socket wrenches. I recommend both and assembly will be impossible without socket wrenches - perferably deep socket wrenches. Enjoy Customer Buzz
"The height adjustment assembly doesn't work" 2010-06-28 By Michael Wiley Well, we got "The Beast" assembled and it was a beast. As to the main components, I had no problem getting it together, understanding you trade solid framing for difficulty in putting the framework together. The difficult I still have is the height adjustment assembly. There is a main hand crank piece (at the lower end) and a sleeve that extends to near the top of the frame. While the main hand crank piece seems to perform appropriately, there is no linkage to the sleeve. Consequently, while the bottom portion goes up or down depending on the direction you hand crank, the adjustment made simply rides up or down in the sleeve and doesn't extend to raising or lowering the backboard. Now, I've telephoned the customer service representative and they promptly shipped me out a new height adjustment assembly. But the same problem exists, and the assembly guide sheds no light on the inner functioning of sleeve and hand crank piece. So, I'm pretty much left to my own devices to puzzle this one out.  "The Beast is a solid high quality basketball hoop" 2010-05-20 By S. Kister (SF Bay Area, CA USA) After comparing various backboards in the store, the Beast stood out as solid and shook much less than other systems when the ball hit the backboard. I was dreading the assembly after reading the other reviews, but I was able to do it myself in about 4 hours. I echo another commenter, you want deep sockets and a 10-12" socket extender. I missed the comment about using WD40 to join the two poles, that took some effort. The instructions were well-written and all of the nuts and bolts came in separate packages for each step of the installation and were very well-labeled. The backboard easily lowers and raises from 7.5 to 10 feet and can be rolled around without much effort. Customer Buzz
"It IS a Beast!" 2010-04-12 By Brett Davis (Hamilton, OH USA) First and foremost, if you couldn't actually see that this hoop is portable, you would never believe it. This is the sturdiest portable hoop by a landslide! After reviewing several hoops, I decided to pay the extra buck to avoid replacing a less expensive hoop every couple years, and boy am I glad I did. While assembling the hoop was a bit challenging, I succeeding in doing so by myself only needing an extra hand to right the hoop once the backboard was attached. Besides righting the hoop, the only other hiccup was joining the two pieces of pole. This does call for a bit of strength and patience, but again, I assembled this alone. This is the best hoop I've seen outside of an actual gym (and better than some in-gym hoops). The play off of the backboard is very nice and even shots from well beyond NBA 3-point range don't rattle the hoop all that much. This hoop was delivered the Thursday of the NCAA first round, and I've had four people stop by to ask where I got it. It looks great and plays just as well. Thanks Spalding. QUALITY product for all ages! Images Product Read more Spalding The Beast 74560 Portable Basketball Hoop with 60-Inch Glass Backboard
